Introduction
Welcome to our very first Dev Blog! I’m FX, a senior developer at Lunar Client, and today I’ll take you on a deep dive into my project, Turbo Entities!
If you've ever played Minecraft and noticed the game slowing down when too many entities are around, you're not alone. Entity rendering is one of the biggest reasons for performance drops, and existing mods haven't been able to fully fix it, until now. Turbo Entities is an optimization that makes Minecraft run much smoother without changing how the game looks or plays.
The Problem: Entity Rendering Lag
It’s well known that Minecraft can struggle to render large numbers of entities efficiently. Even with high-end computers, frame rates can drop when there are too many entities displayed at once. While some mods, like OptiFine, have tried to improve entity performance, they have made little differences in Minecraft’s modern versions. Other entity optimizations have existed, but they were either buggy, incomplete, or didn’t provide meaningful performance boosts or improvements.
That’s where Turbo Entities comes in. It offers never-before-seen improvements to entity rendering, ensuring the game runs smoothly even with hundreds (or even thousands) of entities on-screen.
Data from Beta Testing
Before releasing a feature like Turbo Entities to the public, it undergoes multiple stages of beta testing. From the very beginning, we observed a significant boost in performance:

Data From You
Even in the most demanding situations, frame rates improved by 8 FPS at the 2nd percentile. While this may not seem like a significant jump, it's a substantial improvement given that this percentile represents millions of players. Large-scale optimizations typically only boost these stats by 1-3 FPS, especially with the numerous factors influencing performance.
Here’s a graph showcasing the average FPS on Lunar Client, highlighting the difference before and after implementing Turbo Entities:

Development Process
Turbo Entities reworked how Minecraft renders entities, ensuring that performance remains high without sacrificing the game’s visuals. By optimizing the way entities are drawn on the screen, it reduces unnecessary work, making everything run more efficiently.

With 11,000 armor stands, the game runs at 133 FPS, demonstrating the true power of Turbo Entities. Without this optimization, the game would crash.
Conclusion
Turbo Entities is a game-changer for Minecraft performance. Whether you’re building, exploring, or battling mobs, you’ll experience a much smoother game. This update benefits millions of players, making Minecraft better for everyone. We’re excited to share it with you. Enjoy the improved performance and happy crafting!
